A neutral cue facilitates detection of a visual target by modulating attention Biol. Res.
HAMAME,CARLOS M; DELANO,PAÚL H; ROBLES,LUIS.
Twelve rats were trained to perform a two-choice visual detection task in which a right or left light was presented and the animáis were required to press the lever located under the illuminated light for a food reward. In seventy percent of the triáis the target light was preceded by presentation of a neutral cue (a central light). Relevance of the neutral cue for detection of the target was analyzed by comparing behavioral Índices of attention in its presence and absence. Accuracy was significantly higher in presence than in absence of the neutral cue, while mean response latencies were lower in presence than in absence of the neutral cue. These results indicate that the animáis allocated attentional resources on the target detection during a high...

A new approach to chemical modification protocols of Aspergillus niger and sorption of lead ion by fungal species Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rafiu Awofolu,Omotayo; Okechukwu Okonkwo,Jonathan; Roux-Van Der Merwe,Renate; Badenhorst,Jackie; Jordaan,Erika.
Biomasses of five fungi species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium austurianum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mucor arcindloides and Trichoderma reesi were evaluated for their uptake of lead ion from aqueous solution using batch systems. Both dead and live fungal biomasses were comparatively studied for their adsorption efficiencies. The effect of pH as one of the primary factors that influences sorption efficiency of metal ions in solution was also studied. Modification of the fungal biomass with the least sorption capacity was carried out using a four-step procedure. Three different modifying agents under the optimised experimental conditions were used. The percentage uptake of lead ion by fungi species ranged from: Aspergillus niger: 6.71-64.95% and...

A new low molecular mass alkaline cyclodextrin glucanotransferase from Amphibacillus sp. NRC-WN isolated from an Egyptian soda lake Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Al-Sharawi,Samar Z.R.; Ibrahim,Abdelnasser S.S.; El-Shatoury,Einas H; Gebreel,Hassan M; Eldiwany,Ahmad.
Background: Cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) is one of the most industrially important enzymes used in the commercial production of cyclodextrins (CDs). Alkaliphilic bacteria have attracted much interest in the last few decades because of their ability to produce extracellular enzymes that are active and stable at high pH values. Here, we report the isolation of a new CGTase from alkaliphilic bacteria collected from Egyptian soda lakes and describe the purification and biochemical characterization of this CGTase. Results: Screening for CGTase-producing alkaliphilic bacteria from sediment and water samples collected from Egyptian soda lakes located in the Wadi Natrun valley resulted in the isolation of a potent CGTase-producing alkaliphilic...

A new method: measurement of microleakage volume using human, dog and bovine permanent teeth Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Yavuz,Izzet; Aydin,Haluk; Ulku,Refik; Kaya,Sadullah; Tumen,Caner.
This study investigates the feasibility of a different new approach to determining the microleakage volume associated with dental restorations (Class V cavity restorated with glass ionomer cement + high copper amalgam) and the relative marginal adaptation deficiency of dog, bovine and human permanent teeth in in vitro conditions. Also researched is the appropriateness of using dog and bovine teeth in in vitro studies rather than human teeth. Our method utilizes the molecular adsorption characteristics of methylene blue. Within the framework of this study, 60 permanent teeth (20 human, 20 dogs and 20 bovine) were used. These groups were evaluated statistically, of which indicated no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). It was also concluded...

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAI) is a clinical entity that has been recognized in recent years as a frequent cause of pain and the early development of hip arthrosis. Subspine hip impingement is characterized by the prominent or abnormal morphology of the anteroinferior iliac spine (AIIS), which contributes to the development of a clinical picture that is similar to FAI. The aims of this study were to propose a new morphological classification of the AIIS, to determine the prevalence of the different AIIS morphologies based on this classification and to correlate the presence of said morphologies with different gender and age groups. The sample consisted of 458 hemipelvises from individuals of known age and sex (264 men and 194 women). Each...

A New Quantitative Method for Predicting Forensic Racial Identity Based on Dental Morphological Trait Analysis International Journal of Morphology
Alsoleihat,Firas.
Few previous studies have demonstrated the likelihood of using the worldwide patterns of dental morphological variation in prediction of ancestry in the context of forensic dental anthropology. This paper introduces a new quantitative method for predicting forensic racial identity of individual specimens based on dental morphological trait analysis. In this study, the inter-population variation in the expression frequency of 16 non-metric tooth crown traits, manifested on the permanent dentition, was used for analysis. The method was developed from the notion that dental morphological characteristics, when viewed as sets of traits rather than isolated variables, can be utilized to calculate the relative probability that an individual belongs to a...

A new record of Equus (Mammalia: Equidae) from the Late Pleistocene of central-south Chile RChHN
RECABARREN,OMAR P; PINO,MARIO; CID,INÉS.
Fourteen dental and bone parts of a horse excavated from the Pilauco paleontological site, Osorno (40°39' S-73°07' W) are analysed and interpreted. This site was formed in association with a peat bog located on the banks of the old Damas River and has conserved abundant late Pleistocene mammalian fauna and flora materials. A date of 11457 ± 140 14C yrs B.P. was obtained from a molar and agrees with our stratigraphic age model. We have identified the fossils as pertaining to the species Equus (Amerhippus) andium, which confirms its presence in central-south Chile. Furthermore, the recorded geographic location indicate that the metapodial adaptations of the specimens previously described agree with the reconstructed late Pleistocene landscape of Pilauco,...

A New Statistical Method for Comparative Anatomy International Journal of Morphology
Aversi-Ferreira,Tales Alexandre.
Rules, formulas and statistical tests have been widely used in studies that use continuous variables in the normal or Gaussian distribution or other tests whose data fit this type of distribution (t and z distributions) and whose parameters can be defined. However, there are cases in which the model and goal of the scientific work allow only the use of discrete or nominal variables. The absence or presence of a structure or organ (muscles, nerves, blood vessels, bones, and ligaments), characteristics associated with these organs, such as the source of nerves, vessels and muscles and the distribution of nerves and vessels are discrete and / or nominal variables that do not fit the Gaussian distribution, nor of z or t, unless the measures of these structures...

A new variety of Bacopa monnieri obtained by in vitro polyploidization Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Salvio Escandón,Alejandro; Hagiwara,Juan Carlos; Alderete,Liliana Marisol.
The commercial value of Bacopa monnieri, a widespread herbaceous plant in Argentina, can be substantially improved increasing its flower size by chromosome doubling with colchicine. MS supplemented with 0.25 mg/L of 6-benzylaminopurine proved to be an appropriate medium for the in vitro multiplication of nodal segments of B. monnieri. Polyploidization was achieved submerging nodal segments during 24 or 48 hrs in colchicine solution 0.001 and 0.01% P/V, in 1% DMSO. Segments submerged in water and in DMSO 1% aqueous solution were used as controls. DNA contents from recovered plants was measured and characterized and their phenotype described. Two tetraploid plants originated from independent events were detected. These plants showed significant differences...

A note on stability in food matrices of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis-controlling bacteriophages Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Robeson,James; Turra,Gabriel; Huber,Karen; Borie,Consuelo.
Background Lytic bacteriophages are bacterial viruses that upon infection kill their host cells and therefore have re-emerged as biological control agents of bacterial pathogens, particularly in the field of food related infections. Here, we investigated the stability in different food matrices of five phage isolates capable of controlling the foodborne pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE). Results We found that two phages, originally isolated from food sources, were up to 5 logs more stable than three phages isolated from sewage, in ten food matrices (fresh and processed) at both 4°C and 18°C. Conclusion Lytic phages isolated from contaminated food sources seem to be a better choice when structuring phage cocktails to be used in the...

A novel chloroplastic isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase gene from Jatropha curcas: Cloning, characterization and subcellular localization Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Wei,Lei; Yin,Li; Hu,Xiaole; Xu,Ying; Chen,Fang.
Background Jatropha curcas is a rich reservoir of pharmaceutically active terpenoids. More than 25 terpenoids have been isolated from this plant, and their activities are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-cancer, insecticidal, rodenticidal, cytotoxic and molluscicidal. But not much is known about the pathway involved in the biosynthesis of terpenoids. The present investigation describes the cloning, characterization and subcellular localization of isopentenyl diphosphate isomerase (IPI) gene from J. curcas. IPI is one of the rate limiting enzymes in the biosynthesis of terpenoids, catalyzing the crucial interconversion of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). Results A full-length JcIPI cDNA consisting of 1355 bp was cloned....

A Novel Method for Localizing Nerve Entry Points During Spasticity Treatment International Journal of Morphology
Yang,Shengbo; Hu,Shuangjiang; Tian,Xufeng; Hu,Shuaiyu.
The nerve entry points (NEPs) cannot be accurately localized for the treatment of muscle spasticity in neurolysis. The aim of this study was to develop a new method of accurately localizing nerve entry points in relation to bony landmarks. NEPs in human cadavers were coated with barium sulfate. Method 1 consisted of horizontal and longitudinal reference lines being designated based on bony landmarks, followed by radiography and measurements using picture archiving and communication system software. Method 2 involved sewing the barium sulfate-soaked suture thread into the skin to designate the horizontal and longitudinal reference lines, followed by computed tomography (CT) scanning to determine the skin surface location and puncture depth for the NEPs....

A Novel Path of Communication from Kidney to the Adrenal Gland in Bactrian Camels (Camelus bactrianus) International Journal of Morphology
Ye,Wenling; Wang,Fengling; Lv,Shuangyu; Wang,Yange; Dong,Shuo; Wang,Jianlin.
The adrenal gland is an important endocrine organ in vertebratesthat produces a wide variety of hormones. The anatomical results showed that the adrenal gland in Bactrian camel had a typical blood supply and innervation. Surprisingly, we found that there was a novel connection mainly consisted of fibrous tissue, blood vessels and nerve bundles between the adrenal gland and the kidney in Bactrian camel, and we named it fibrous tissue-blood vessels-nerve bundles (FBN bundle). To the best of our knowledge, this FBN bundle was the first reported in Bactrian camel, and not yet observed in other animals. While, its functions and mechanisms should be studied further. We speculated that a direct function of this novel path might be to strengthen the communication...
